The Great Hunger in Ireland, like many famines, are not only caused by environmental effects but also social, economic and political factors that turn a potential food shortage into a calamity affecting the lives of millions. Professor James Heniff looks at the causes of the famine and its effects on the people of Ireland as well as the British government’s response and the mass emigration that followed.
