Veterans Day is a special time for us to come together and honor the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. military, both past and present. It’s a day to say thank you for their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting our freedoms. Beyond showing our gratitude, Veterans Day reminds us of the challenges many veterans face, and it encourages us to support them in meaningful ways, from healthcare to housing and employment.
In Mundelein, we proudly honor our veterans through initiatives like the Hometown Heroes Veteran’s Banner Project. This project displays banners of local veterans along major roads during Memorial Day and Veterans Day, celebrating their contributions across all branches of the military. The Lake County Veterans and Family Services Foundation also hosts appreciation dinners and social activities, giving our local veterans a chance to connect and feel the support of the community. Many high schools in the area are also hosting veterans so the students can hear their stories firsthand.
Consider visiting your local American Legion Post or VFW hall to talk with a veteran, or donate time or money to in support of veterans. Some local possibilities, as well as resources for veterans may be found on the library’s website: https://fremontlibrary.org/military-veteran-services.
