Vital Records

Vital Records published in Mundelein Newspapers
The Mundelein Review, published by the Pioneer Press, and the Mundelein News, published by Lakeland Press are both weekly newspapers. In 2006, the News changed its name to the Mundelein Journal. In early 2007, the Lakeland Press ceased publication of the Mundelein Journal, and we started indexing the vital records found in the Grayslake Journal. For the purposes of this index, MR = Mundelein Review, MN = Mundelein News MJ = Mundelein Journal and GJ = Grayslake Journal. Obituaries are published every week; births, engagements and weddings are published on an irregular basis. All index pages are arranged alphabetically by the last name(s) of the person/people involved.

This indexing project was started in the summer of 1998. There were a few 1997 issues of the newspapers available; the 1998 run of issues was almost complete. The indexes will indicate when issues were missing.

Note: When you see the "?" mark, this means that the information was either difficult to read or seemed unusual in some way (e.g. - an obituary that states a person died a year ago, but that the service will be held in the coming week)

Fremont Public Library received a grant to index the vital records from The Herald, a local weekly paper. Our library owns the microfilm for this newspaper from April 1971 through March 1984. For more information on this project, and to view the indexes, go to: Herald Indexing Project

How  do I get a copy of the complete information?
The notices of births, engagements, weddings and deaths have been photocopied and filed by date in the library's local history collection. People may come in to make their own copies. People from outside our immediate area may request copies by mail; please include a stamped, self-addressed business sized envelope.

You must include the following information:
Person's name, the date the notice was published, and the name of the newspaper. Remember, in the indexes, MR stands for the Mundelein Review and MN stands for the Mundelein News
