Finding materials for your early reader can often be frustrating. To better help you find appropriate reading materials for your child, the Fremont Public Library has developed a system for early reader books based on the language, content and format of each book.
Five Finger Rule:
- Have the child read any text-filled page of the book she has chosen. For each word she does not know, have the child put up one finger.
- At the end of the page, if the child has five fingers up, then the book is too hard; if no fingers are up, the book is too easy.
- The child should try to have two or three fingers up for a book that is “just right.”
- By using this method, the child can independently choose an appropriate book to help her grow as a reader.
